QUALISOY Applauds USDA Regulatory Approval for Plenish™ High Oleic Soybeans

QUALISOY to Help Champion High Oleic Adoption by Food Companies and Farmers

ST. LOUIS, June 23, 2010 – QUALISOY joins Pioneer, a DuPont business, in celebrating the recent news that the Plenish™ high oleic soybean trait has been approved by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for cultivation in the United States. This represents the final step of the U.S. regulatory process.

“Food companies can now look forward to a soy-based trans fat solution that is not only more stable, but has less saturated fat than commodity soybeans,” said John Becherer, QUALISOY CEO. “And, soybean farmers can now take another step toward growing crops that are evolving along with the needs of their customers. QUALISOY eagerly anticipates helping to educate both food companies and farmers about the benefits of Plenish™ high oleic soybeans.”

Plenish™ high oleic soybeans from Pioneer contain a high oleic acid content of more than 75 percent. This significantly increases the stability of the oil, provides greater flexibility in food applications, and yields a product with 0g trans fat. Plenish™ high oleic soybean oil also has 20 percent less saturated fat than commodity soybean oil, making it a more attractive ingredient for consumer food products.

“The Plenish™ approval is not only good news for the food industry, but it’s also good news for farmers and for consumers,” said Mr. Becherer. “In the quest to reduce trans fat in food products, commodity soybean oil has lost a portion of its traditional market, and that portion is now being recaptured by trait enhanced oils like Plenish™ high oleic soybean oil, developed to specifically address certain functionality and health needs. Most importantly, consumers will benefit when they buy products made with Plenish™ high oleic soybean oil, because trans fat will be removed in many products without adding saturated fat.”

QUALISOY’s 22-member Board of Directors sets research priorities, evaluates existing and emerging technologies, and helps identify future soybean trait enhancements that would benefit the food and feed industries.
